Blended Learning-expanding your learning success

Let’s first discuss what we mean by Blended Learning.

When we use the term Blended Learning, we mean providing a variety of integrated learning opportunities such as classroom and workshop based activity, online and offline learning tools as well as on the job learning with job aids and support tools – all of which contribute to the knowledge and skills that a learner may need in the workplace.

Now let’s take a look at some typical activities, tools and approaches that you can combine in order to introduce blended learning delivery across your organisation:

  • Classroom based training (or a flipped classroom – more on this in another article)
  • Smart presentations
  • Standard video or interactive video
  • Animated videos
  • Online courses or elearning
  • Interactive PDF documents
  • Apps or flash cards for smartphones and tablets
  • Process posters, job aids & checklists
  • Infographics
  • Webinars
  • Audio podcasts
  • Micro Learning Portals

What are the benefits of a blended learning approach?

This mixture of learning activities and material is often more successful for knowledge transfer than relying on one type alone.  People learn and absorb information in different ways, so delivering a variety of learning opportunities, you are more likely to increase take up of the knowledge required.  Another major benefit is that this mixed approach is likely to help with longer term retention.

How do you move towards a blended approach?

Start by reviewing your current learning materials and consider whether introducing enhanced tools and approaches could offer improved learning.

For example, if you have purely text based material then a video or interactive content could support this text. If you have video training material then consider making this interactive or introducing other interactive content such as interactive infographics for processes or adding quiz functionality to test comprehension.
